Sharla Glick Artist Statement
I have enjoyed photography in some form since the age of six, when I won a camera in a reading contest. My love of photography and reading has been intertwined ever since: I have a bit of a book addiction, specifically a photography book addiction. As in other media, the subject possibilities are endless in photography, although I especially enjoy sports photography, as well as street photography and informal portraiture. I use mostly Canon digital equipment, although I still shoot film and slides occasionally and enjoy working in the darkroom. About 75% of my finished work is in black and white. I didn’t become serious about photography until joining the Des Moines Camera Club and taking classes through them. I had the privilege of taking the last class taught by local Master Photographer, the late Ray Andrews, and I always try to incorporate some of the things I learned from him in each image. I also enjoy membership in several regional and national photography groups: N4C council of Camera Clubs, Photographic Society of America and Professional Photographers of America as well as PP of Iowa.
Pottery is a craft I began to enjoy about five years ago when I was encouraged to take classes from Greg Lamont and Mary Weisgram. I primarily use it as a form of late night relaxation, frequently throwing forms that never see the inside of a kiln, I just recycle the clay and throw it again – sometimes photographing the wet forms.
Whether behind the lens or behind the wheel, I enjoy capturing form and texture, line and movement.
